History of Puerto del Rosario County

Before the conquest of Fuerteventura in 1404, it was divided into two indigenous kingdoms: Maxorata, led by Guize, and Jandía, led by Ayoze. In 1404 the Norman Jean de Bethencourt and his captain Gadifer de lan Salle, with the authorization of the King of Castilla, conquered the island. The capital was settled in what is nowadays Betancuria, called so in honour of Bethencourt. In 1713, the civil authority of Fuerteventura considered Puerto de Cabras as a suitable harbour for the manufacturing of lime, cereals and mainly saltwort ( a plant from which soda to produce soaps is abtained). In 1778 the parish of Tetir was created and in 1792 also the parish of Casillas del Ángel. From 1812 they became municipalities. In 1835 the municipality of Puerto de Cabras ( the current Puerto del Rosario) was created next to the coast of the municipality of Tetir. In 1860 Pedro Olive considered Puerto de Cabras as the actual capital of the island, because it was a port and had administrative, commercial, and legal funtions. Between 1925 and 1926, the councils of Tetir and Casillas de Ángel decided to wind up in order to become part of Puerto de Cabras, whose name was changed into Puerto del Rosario in 1956. The population slowly grew and occasionally regressed during all the 19th century because the conditions of the island were not the best possible for an economic growth. From the end of the 19th century, and particularly during the 20th century, some sort of demographic take-off was noticed, which in 1930 was spectacular due to the annexations of Tetir in 1925 and Casillas del Ángel in 1926. The population of Puerto del Rosario continued growing gradually until 1975, when the legion arrived in Fuerteventura, bringing more than three thousands soldiers together with their families, which meant an important increase in the population. From the last years to the present days it has experienced a continuous and substantial growth.
